Celebrating our diversity on nations and nationality day


More than 1000 invited guests and city residents assembled to celebrate another historic day-The Millennium Day of Nations, Nationalities and Peoples of Ethiopia on December 9 at the Addis Ababa City Assembly Hall , organized by  the Addis Ababa Millennium Secretariat and the Addis Ababa City Administration .

Hagos Hailu, Cabinet Member and Head of the Addis Ababa Care Taker Administration Education Bureau, on his opening speech said that the day is indeed special and unique, especially since it has dovetailed with the Millennium celebrations. He added, “Besides it is a drilling force for all nations and nationalities of Ethiopia to further strengthen the country’s economic development”

Head of Projects Information, Communication and Promotion Department of the Addis Ababa Millennium Secretariat , Biruk Gebre Medhin in his part said “December 9 is remarkable in the fact that Ethiopians endorsed the constitution of FDRE which guarantees rights to the nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia. Besides it is the day in which we vowed to materialize Ethiopian renaissance.”

Following the speeches, the celebration was packed with variety of shows that kept the audience amused till 8:00 PM. The audience response was especially exuberant as they took part by dancing and applauding to the breath taking traditional music and dance performances of the various Ethiopian nations and nationalities that were presented by the Addis Ababa theater performers.

The joy and laughter of the gathering reached its climax as the famous comedian Kibebew Geda took center stage and carried on with his humor.

Men and women models adorned with traditional attires flaunted the different original hair dressings of the various nations and nationalities of the country on a traditional hair style show that was organized by ‘Alemtsehay Shuruba’.

Another show that kept the audience glued to their sit with fascination was the musical drama presented by Fabula Arts group. Through their drama, they depicted the centuries old Ethiopian culture of tolerance and peaceful coexistence between nations and nationalities. Biruk captured this sense in his speech when he said, “Ethiopia’s multitude of nations and nationalities and their peaceful coexistence contributes greatly to build the country’s image positively.”

With this and other events the gathering celebrated the day colorfully until 8:00 PM.
